Why cops are associated with doughnuts

Ever wondered why cops are associated with doughnuts.

In the 1950s doughnuts shops were one of the first food businesses that stayed open late at night and thus became hot spots for police officers working the night shift to grab a bite to eat.

Also donut shops have traditionally offered discounts and free coffee to cops to discourage robbery and theft.

This became choice architecture.

If a criminal was going to rob a place late at night, where would they go? The donut shop that could have a cop close by or the late night liquor store?

Choice architecture can be planned just like these stories:

In Switzerland public toilets are lit with blue lights so people can’t find their veins when injecting drugs.

Conservationists in South Africa are infusing a special red dye into the horns of live rhinos. The mixture renders the horn completely useless to poachers trying to sell it commercially and is also toxic for human consumption.

How could you use choice architecture to make people choose what you want them to choose?
